According to the authors of the 2015 State of Green Business Report, the total of green office space as in the number of global LEED-certified commercial projects dropped 2% from 2013 to 2014. Though registrations and certifications for new construction and commercial spaces declined, LEED retrofits of existing buildings increased.
The outlook isn’t entirely bleak, however. The report believes technology may come to the rescue. They predict: “More targeted methods to slice and dice building data to extract maximum value, and new mechanisms to better store and integrate on-site renewable energy and more effectively harnessing natural capital to help scale the passive or living building trends.
Such innovations will contribute to reducing the environmental performance of buildings overall — regardless of whether those buildings are ever certified as “green.”
